Roy Rogers Movies

Roy Rogers was a movie idol from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. From 1951 - 1957 he also had a successful television series, "The Roy Rogers Show." Even today, his movies and TV shows remain enduringly popular, and many of them are available on DVD and VHS.

Roy Rogers starred in his first movie, "Under Western Stars" in 1938. In his early movies he played both good and bad guys, but he quickly became best known as a good-guy cowboy hero. His most popular movies featured Roy playing himself with his golden palomino stallion Trigger giving him a ride and a hand all throughout the film. His frequent and highly popular co-stars included Andy Devine, George "Gabby" Hayes, Dale Evans (who became his real-life wife), and Bob Nolan and the Sons Of The Pioneers (a Western singing group founded by Roy Rogers, Bob Nolan, and Tim Spencer). Roy and his guest stars found plenty of excuses to sing cowboy songs in his movies, and there was always lots of Western action including fistfights, shootouts, runaway horses, and chases on horseback.

From his very first starring role in "Under Western Stars," 1938, Roy Rogers was teamed with the golden palomino stallion Trigger. Roy Rogers and Trigger went on to make more than 80 movies together and 100 TV shows. Feeling a genuine love for the horse and also realizing that Trigger could make a star out of anyone that rode him, Roy purchased the horse for his own early in his career. Trigger never failed to thrill movie audiences with his speed, willingness to help his best pal Roy, and his movie-idol good looks. The team of Roy Rogers and Trigger made movies and TV shows together until Trigger's retirement in 1957. You can read Trigger's biography here.

Movie Formats: DVD and VHS

DVD - Movie DVDs come with region codes, also sometimes called region formats. It's important that you buy a DVD with the correct region code for your area, or it may not play in your DVD player. Region 1 is the region code for North America, which, of course, includes the United States and Canada. If you live in the United States or Canada and purchased your DVD player locally, you will probably need a region 1 DVD.

VHS - The video standard recorded on video cassettes varies from country to country. The two most common video standards are NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the standard used in North America (and most of South America). So, if you live in the USA or Canada and purchased your VHS player locally, you will probably want the NTSC format so that your video player can understand it.
