The Man On The Knife: About Roy Rogers

Many Roy Rogers' knives bear the likeness of Roy Rogers and/or Trigger, his famous palomino stallion. Below is a brief biography on Roy Rogers, known as the King Of The Cowboys. For more complete information, we suggest you see our Roy Rogers biography on this page.

  • Roy Rogers (1911 - 1998) - Roy Rogers was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1911. His name at birth was Leonard Franklin Slye.
  • A few months after he was born baby Len and his family moved onto a houseboat built from salvaged material made by Len's father and his father's blind brother. The family moved down the Ohio river to Portsmouth, Ohio where they lived on the houseboat for several years.
  • When Len was 5 or 6 years old his father had to keep his job in a shoe factory in Portsmouth while Len, his mother, and his sisters moved 12 miles away to a farm in Duck Run. His father came home every other weekend while young Len and the rest of the family lived on and worked the farm.
  • When Len was 17 he and the family moved back to Cincinnati where Len and his father went to work in a shoe factory.
  • When Len was 18 years old he talked his parents into taking a trip to visit his older sister who had married and moved to California. Len loved it there, and although he briefly returned to Cincinnati with his parents, he soon moved to California for good. Before too long, his parents joined him.
  • Len's first years in California were hard. He drove a gravel truck for a construction company until the company went bankrupt, then became a migratory fruit picker. Len began working on his dream of becoming a singer, but for several years he met with a lot of hunger and very little success.
  • In 1933 Leonard Franklin Slye formed a singing group with two other men, Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer. The original name of the group was the Pioneer Trio, but their name was soon changed to the Sons Of The Pioneers.
  • The Sons Of The Pioneers achieved huge success as singers, and were also frequently cast in small parts in movies. Leonard Slye, using the name Dick Weston, also got a few small parts on his own.
  • In late 1937 Leonard Slye signed a contract with Republic Pictures. He changed his name to Roy Rogers, and in 1938 landed his first starring role in "Under Western Stars." For the movie Roy Rogers chose a horse to ride named Golden Cloud, but he soon changed the horse's name to Trigger. When "Under Western Stars" was released it was a huge success, launching the duo of Roy Rogers and Trigger onto the path of international cinematic superstardom.
