Common Bedspread Terms
- Bed Skirt or Dust Ruffle - A bed
skirt can also be called a dust ruffle. It is a decorative piece of cloth placed underneath a mattress
that hangs down to the floor. While it is largely used for decorative reasons,
it also serves a practical purpose of keeping dust from
collecting underneath a bed. Bed
skirts are usually designed to coordinate with a comforter, pillowcases and/or
shams, and sometimes also curtains. Bed skirts are usually attached to a bed by
elastic, Velcro, or other methods.
- Chenille - A chenille bedspread is characterized by being soft, fuzzy, plush,
etc. A chenille bedspread can be made from a wide variety of fabrics as long as
the bedspread is soft, fuzzy, etc. The word "chenille" is derived from the
French for word for "caterpillar."
- Comforter - A comforter is similar to a bedspread, but it is usually thicker
with more insulation for extra warmth.
- Damask - A fabric (often cotton, linen, or silk) with a pattern woven into
it.
- Dust Ruffle - See "Bed Skirt or Dust Ruffle," above.
- Duvet - A duvet (pronounced "due-vay") is similar to, or the same thing
as, a comforter. Like a comforter it is usually heavier than a bedspread and
will have extra insulation for warmth. While comforters are used on their own,
Duvets might be designed to be used on their own or they might be designed to be
used inside of a duvet cover (see below).
- Duvet Cover - A duvet cover is a cover for a duvet.
Using a duvet cover makes it fast and easy to change the look of your bedding.
In addition, it is easier to wash a duvet cover than a duvet. When shopping for
a duvet cover it is best to purchase the size you need according to the actual
inch measurements of the duvet cover rather than going be generic size labels.
- Jacquard - A jacquard fabric is made
by weaving differently colored threads to form a pattern. The fabric is named
for its inventor, Joseph Jacquard.
- Pile - A pile fabric is a fabric with with cut fibers or uncut loops that
stand up densely on the surface. Pile fabrics typically have a soft, plush feel.
- Sham - A sham is a decorative covering for a pillow on a bed. They are
removable, often coordinate with the bed covering, and are usually larger than
the pillowcases.
- Suede - Suede is leather that has had the surface specially manufactured to
create a nap instead of a smooth finish. If you are considering buy a suede
bedspread or a bedspread with suede accents, read
the bedspreads description to see it is dry clean
only.
- Velour - A fabric with a thick pile.
